Continued Collaboration on Priority Research Initiatives in Caraga

By: Maryjyl B. Arizala

The Department of Budget and Management Regional Office XIII was invited as resource person in the one-day Research Proposal Workshop for the Updating of Public Investment Program (PIP) of the Caraga State University (CSU) last October 4, 2023. The said workshop aimed at bringing together research faculties to collaboratively identify, discuss and prioritize CSU’s research initiatives for FY 2025. It will also ensure that investments for research and development are aligned with the strategic goals of the Government addressing evolving needs of the community.

Elvin D. Chatto, Chief Budget and Management Specialist and Maryjyl B. Arizala, Budget and Management Specialist II, represented DBM RO XIII in the said workshop. In his presentation, Mr. Chatto highlighted the significance of a well-defined research proposal consistent with the budget priorities framework set and issued by the DBM every year. He further emphasized that results of the research initiatives of the University should also be utilized by the industries and/or communities. The discussion of CBMS x`Chatto also included the documentary requirements for research and extension project proposals as well as the possible expenditure directions for research initiatives in FY 2025 such as food security, innovation and digital transformation of the government.

To date, a total of eighteen (18) research and extension projects amounting to P37,451,000 were already funded from the General Appropriations Act (GAA) for Caraga State University. The University hopes to implement five (5) new research and extension projects as approved under the Locally Funded Projects in the FY 2024 National Expenditure Program. Aside from the GAA, CSU has been working with various government agencies such as DOST, DA and DTI to fund  research and extension initiatives.

The DBM through the leadership of Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman continuously supports research and development efforts and initiatives of SUCs  aimed at elevating the socio-economic status of communities particularly in the countryside.
